Rural Employment alternatives, Inc. (R.E.A) is a non-profit agency located in Conroy, Iowa. R.E.A. serves approximately 75 adults with varying disabilities which include: mental retardation, mental illness, developmental disabilities, autism, visual impairments, and brain injuries.
R.E.A has been incorporated since 1980 and currently provides Supported Employment services in the community to persons with disabilities (clients). This service allows each individual the opportunity to decide the type of work they are interested in doing and receive support on the job that is necessary to be a successful employee. Supported Employment offers clients the opportunity to work within an integrated setting. Clients receive wages, enabling them to contribute to the local tax base and engage in a less restrictive and more independent life style. It is a "win-win" situation for both the clients and the employer. R.E.A. currently works with approximately 40 local businesses that provide employment opportunities to adults with disabilities.
R.E.A. also provides a Sheltered Workshop setting to clients that prefer not to work in the community. Clients are paid a "piece-rate" for work completed. Several years ago, R.E.A. formed a small business at the workshop. The small business, Custom Outsource Services, (C.O.S.) works closely with area businesses and provides services such as mailing, packaging, small assembly, and shipping. by contracting with businesses to do these jobs, the small business will assist with generating additional revenues and become less dependent on public assistance.
In addition, Pre-Vocational training opportunities, paid or unpaid, are offered that enhance skills needed obtain employment. Examples may include: staying on task, following directions, problem solving, academics, and peer-to-peer relationship building.
In July 2005, R.E.A also began to provide Day Habilitation services, which focus on the development and maintenance of life skills and community integration.
